A List of Ballpark Prices for Common Heating, Air Conditioning, & Heat Pump Repairs

The Ballpark Price column shows approximate prices for typical repairs. Those ballpark prices include ALL time and materials, including diagnostic time. Scroll to the bottom to learn what a typical repair is, what “OEM” stands for, and for answers to other questions.

Repair times can vary significantly. For example, replacing a capacitor on one furnace can take ten minutes. Replacing a capacitor on another furnace can take an hour. The Price Range column reflects that variability.

FAQs

What’s a typical repair?
That’s a repair in which I’m diagnosing a permanent problem (as opposed to intermittent) on basic equipment that’s readily accessible and then repairing it with parts stocked on the van.

What’s an atypical repair?
That can be any repair that’s the opposite of the above in any way, including repairs involving fluid leaks.

What’s “Universal”?
A universal part covers many applications. For example, a universal circuit board can replace hundreds of OEM circuit boards. Most universal parts are just as good as OEM parts.

What’s “OEM”?
OEM stands for “original equipment manufacturer”. An OEM part usually has the same manufacturer as the original part. OEM parts are often expensive and may have to be ordered.

Why ballpark prices?
Your equipment may be on the roof, or in the crawlspace, or somewhere in between. Given the variety, I can’t quote an exact price online.

Why are some prices ranges so wide?
Seemingly similar parts can have very different costs. And seemingly similar repairs can take very different amounts of time to perform.

Can the price be more than what’s shown in the Price Range column?
It’s uncommon, but yes. Some systems are unusually complex and/or difficult to access, so they cost more repair. We can probably figure out if you have such a system by talking on the phone.
